Intel-Powered Servers set TPC-H benchmark Record - under LINUX !

"Powered by up to four 700 MHz Intel® Pentium® III XeonTM processors in a space-saving 4U (7-inch) chassis, SGI 1450 is targeted at data center customers who want maximum four-way system performance to run demanding business applications, implement clustering solutions, or run active intranet, Internet, and e-commerce sites. SGI 1450 offers a low entry price point for a four-way system, significant expansion options, and a range of reliability features to ensure continuous uptime. "

SGI Runs World's First TPC-H Benchmark on Linux
Achieves New TPC-H Record; Extends Dominance as Performance Leader

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (May 16, 2001)— SGI (NYSE: SGI), a leader in high-performance multi-platform computing, today announced that it has set two new world records: the first-ever TPC-H benchmark running the Linux® operating system and a new 100GB TPC-H performance record.

"This TPC-H benchmark demonstrates that SGI is positioned as the leading vendor for reliable, high-performance Linux database server solutions," said Desh Urs, vice president, industry solutions, alliances and application engineering, SGI. "SGI made a strategic decision in 1999 to support the Linux OS on Intel architectures. The cornerstone of SGI's Linux strategy is the extension of our expertise with the IRIX operating system and databases to the Linux platform. Linux solutions complement our high-performance, high-quality SGI IRIX solutions."

The 100GB TPC-H benchmark was run using a four-node SGITM 1450 server with IBM DB2 Universal Database® EEE Version 7.2, Linux 2.4.3 and SGI ProPack 1.5, achieving a Composite Queries per-Hour rating of 2,733.8 and a price performance of $347. The system as tested will be available October 31, 2001. The benchmark results can be found on the TPC Web site at www.tpc.org/tpch/results/h-ttperf.idc.

About the TPC-H Benchmark
The TPC-H is a decision-support benchmark defined by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC). The TPC-H benchmark consists of a suite of business-oriented ad hoc queries and concurrent data modifications. The queries and the data populating the database have been chosen to have broad, industry-wide relevance. This benchmark illustrates decision-support systems that examine large volumes of data, execute queries with a high degree of complexity and give answers to critical business questions.

The performance metric reported by TPC-H is called the TPC-H Composite Query-per-Hour Performance metric and reflects multiple aspects of the capability of the system to process queries. These aspects include the selected database size against which the queries are executed, the query processing power when queries are submitted by a single stream and the query throughput when queries are submitted by multiple concurrent users. The TPC is located on the Web at www.tpc.org.
