The graphs are based upon the current options configurations. In some cases, it's extremely sharp.
[look up QCOM June MaxPain, you will know what I mean].

At any rate, the MaxPain points should be call M-P range sometimes. That's why a given stock could oscillate back and forth numerous times in the days leading to expiry. When open interests are wound down substantially, the MMs could then move away from the MPs.
