I spent the past couple hours looking over what we spend for electricity and fuel oil (furnace and water heater) - the DOE and EPA has an interactive javascript program that helps you analyze energy use - we could save $500-$1000 a year at the present cost of 6 cents kWh just by adjusting our thermostats. A real eye opener.

Re: sun in VA - more than you'd think - according to this source, I can get on my south-facing roof an average of 4.7 kWh/per square meter/day, roughly 1700/square meter/yr.

The southwest, of course, is much sunnier.
