If consumer debt was increasing at only the same rate as consumer income is increasing, that would be sustainable. But debt has been increasing at a greater rate than incomes, for both consumers and corporations. People have been paying for their lifestyles with home equity loans and credit cards. The massive telco buildout has been financed with debt, not cash flows.
