Science accepts that the world is round because no evidence has emerged to challenge that belief. If somebody comes up with a new method of measuring and proves that the earth is in fact oval, science will believe that, if the method stands up to peer review.

Science has a built in process that allows it - in fact, requires it - to evolve. If science were a religion, we would still believe that the earth is flat. Observations to the contrary would be dismissed as apparent contradictions, and the priesthood would assure us (when they could spare time from booking round-the-world flights) that from God's perspective, there is no contradiction at all. between the false observation of roundness and the revealed truth of flatness. The gullible among us would swallow this hook, line, and sinker, regurgitating it faithfully on Internet message boards. They would call their gullibility "faith", and declare it a virtue.
