Bones, what you're talking about there isn't pleasant, and, you're right, most people, imo, don't want to hear it.
Basically, you're describing the percentage of the population (whatever that percentage is) that isn't market savvy, and all they know is what they've heard from their "investment advisor" or the media.
To them, the 401(k) or the Roth IRA sounded like great ideas. Well, former Sen. Roth lost in the last election, and the 401(k) is not exactly what it sounds like. Few people actually have 410K in their 401(k)'s.
To me, the question is, what now? What's the next great "scheme?" And how many people have lost so much confidence in how markets "work" that they'll never be investors again?
And that's a shame, because we should be believers in the prospects, longer term, of many, many companies out there, and our innovators of the future.
But what's the old saying, "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."
Many who have lost have vowed to not be fools again.
