11:50am 05/15/01 Merrill cuts 2001, ups 2002 PC sales est ($GHA, DELL, CPQ, GTW, AAPL) By Tomi Kilgore
Analyst Steve Fortuna at Merrill Lynch cut his worldwide PC unit growth forecast for 2001 to 3 percent from 7 percent, after recent checks suggest continued weakness in demand. However, he said in a research note to clients that: "To the extent that this year proves to be weak, we feel next year could be surprisingly strong in light of the current deferrals coupled with a number of important growth drivers in place." This led him to raise his 2002 growth forecast to 17.5 percent from 15.5 percent. The Goldman Sachs Computer Hardware Index ($GHA) is tacking on 0.5 percent. Among leaders of the sector, Dell Computer (DELL) is adding 13 cents to $24.33, Compaq Computer (CPQ) is ticking up a penny to $15.86, Gateway s (GTW) is slipping 12 cents to $17.63 and Apple Computer (AAPL) is trading 30 cents higher at $23.59.
