Ireland Boosts High-Speed Links In Global Crossing Deal
Updated: Thursday, May 17, 2001 08:58 AM ET

DUBLIN (Dow Jones)--The Irish government Thursday announced an agreement with U.S. telecommunications services provider Global Crossing Ltd. (GX, news, msgs) that will cut high-speed voice, data and Internet call costs between Ireland and key European, U.S. and Asian cities.

The new links will help Ireland continue to attract significant international digital investment in its attempt to become an international e-commerce hub.

The pact builds on an agreement reached in 1999 between the government and Global Crossing to link Ireland's telecom network into six continents via high-speed fiber-optic cable for cheaper telecom connectivity.

Thursday's agreement connects Ireland with 40 European cities, six U.S. cities and three Asian centers.
