Forgiveness works as a measure of peace for the forgiver, to release their own heart from feelings, like vengefulness or hatred, that they don't wish to harbor. Doesn't do squat for the forgiveee since their peace of mind is their own business to deal with.

he doesn't actually seem to be stopping very much

To be fair, we don't know that. The fact that there's so much depravity in the world doesn't give us any indication that there isn't a lot of potential depravity that was mitigated or stifled by people's relationships with Jesus. Papaya has averred that he would otherwise be depraved or more depraved and I have no reason to not accept his testimony.

Karma is a better concept

I heartily agree with you. When Greg posed his question about how we would set things up if we were the Designer, I spent some time thinking about it and concluded that a soul accumulating something like karma over multiple lives is the best and fairest way. I obviates the influence of Hank's whims and ego, gives people who get bad breaks a do-over and takes much of the sting out of death, and focuses on personal responsibility. And it gives us, or rather, our souls, more time in this wonderful world. I like that a lot.
