That is part of "sticking to what you know" in hard assets, that I've tried to repeat in my multiple posts on several thread during the past few weeks. What you're bringing up is basic knowledge, AND only scratches the surface of the DD that's necessary to be successful. And the fact is, there are counterfeits and fakes everywhere, including the stock market where incredible volumes of over priced trash gets sold to uninformed investors at every market top. I was a gem importer, dealer and occasionally partnered with other dealers and retailers myself years ago. So I understand all the risks AND rewards as well as how to go about making the right buy at the right price. Of course, Jim, I realize most people don't enjoy that advantage. My posts have simply been to make people aware that there are other good hard assets out there that many knowledgable buyer made a great deal of money in during the 1970s and will AGAIN in the next few years IMO. I don't have the time or the interest in conducting an extended discussion with all the pros and cons. Simply introducing the subject for those who DO have the interest AND knowledge to dust off their files and get up to date.(G) All the major stones in my collection were tested by a major lab. Have used top labs in Los Angeles and New York. Also have a good local gemologist that I've worked with for years who does good work and has on occasion, obtained a buyer(s) for me when I've wanted to sell a few items. Over 25 years, the appreciated pieces I've sold have nearly paid for the entire collection. Collecting hard assets is very different from stocks. Have mostly traded up and mostly held long term as I have with my oriental rug collection over a period of many years. OTOH I don't know anything about antique cars, real estate, and many other areas. So I wouldn't stick my toe in those waters. STICK TO WHAT YOU KNOW! You'll not only make rather than loose money... You will have a lot of pleasure in the process of building up an asset base of valuable personal property that is a joy to own and look at. Especially if you wife likes to wear a few pieces.(VBG) However...If your only knowledge and experience is in the stock market? STAY THERE! Don't want anybody here claiming bad ole Isopatch led them astray. lol Best regards, Isopatch
