Who Has a Rambus SDRAM/DDR License?

Although there are numerous appeals to follow in the Infineon/Rambus case, at least for now Infineon is not paying royalties on SDRAM or double data rate (DDR) DRAM. However, the same thing can not be said about other DRAM players who are indeed paying these royalties for making exactly the same parts.

Who are the companies that have signed licensing deals with Rambus for SDRAM and DDR memory? Read on.

After a brief legal battle, Hitachi Electronics Co. Ltd. settled out of court its dispute with Rambus, signing a patent-infringement license for SDRAM and DDR memory. That agreement got the ball rolling for Rambus on the licensee front for SDRAM.

In November of last year, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.—the world's largest DRAM manufacturer—signed on to license Rambus' SDRAM and DDR patents. A day after Samsung signed up, Elpida Memory Inc., the joint DRAM venture of NEC Electronics and Hitachi, signed its own patent license with Rambus for SDRAM and DDR.

These two companies stand to potentially lose the most if they continue to pay royalties to Rambus on SDRAM and DDR while Infineon—and potentially others who have lawsuits against Rambus—pay no royalties for manufacturing the same chips.

Toshiba Corp. is also a licensee of Rambus' patents on SDRAM and DDR DRAM. As did, Mitsubishi Electric Corp., which signed a licensing deal in January with Rambus, and for Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., which signed up with Rambus in March.
