Tench,

<But EV7 is important in that it may be Alpha's only real chance against Itanium or McKinley. With Xeon leading most
of the TPC-C charts and Itanium set to push the records even further, EV6 will have a hard time keeping up. A timely
release of EV7 is key to countering this sort of competition, just like a timely release of Northwood is key to Intel
countering the competition from AMD's Athlon.>

No, EV7 is just a placeholder until EV8. EV8 changes things
dramatically. I would like to spend a long technical back and
forth about SMT and how it will be very advantageous with apps
with *very* little ILP (Web Servers, OLTP, and similar large
commercial apps). This whitepaper provides an excellent overview
of just how good SMT will be:

An Analysis of Operating System Behavior on a Simultaneous Multithreaded Architecture

As does:

An Analysis of Database Workload Performance on Simultaneous Multithreaded Processors

cs.washington.edu

Up for it?
