SUVs are another fad just like station wagons were

At what point does a fad become a trend?

Regards
Jay

Most of the SUVs I know of are owned by political and social conservatives. The liberals I know tend to own small foreign cars or Volvos. SUVs came into vogue in my neck of the woods when all the car jackings started and we had one of the worst winters in the history of winters here in the mid-Atlantic states with nine ice storms. (they are terrible on ice, I passed so many in the ditch on my way to work I lost count) People bought them because they felt safer in them, not because they were. I heard over and over again from friends who bought them that in an accident the larger heavier and faster moving car sustains less damage. This was before it became widely known that they had that annoying tendency to roll over in simple one car accidents. I saw one that had rolled over just the other day on my way to work. The driver was DOA.

The car companies loved them because for a while they were able to sell them as trucks and because of that they didn't need to comply with the emissions and safety standards that the passenger cars were subject to. Add in that all they really are is a truck with a cushy interior that somehow could be sold as a luxury vehicle.....somewhere a car company exec was laughing his ass off.
