tip,
I am building a home off the grid over here. Are you bursting my fuel cell bubble? -g-

I was planning on photovoltaic panels with a diesel generator and then replacing the diesel with a propane powered fuel cell unit in a few years...

BTW, the local utility wants 80k to wire me up so that is not an option.

>>expanding the gas distribution infrastructure for wide residential application is a hurdle that will never be overcome. it just doesn't make economic sense.<<

Explain, please. In Louisiana, for example, natural gas is what people use for cooking and heating. The infrastructure is already there.

Tip:

Excellent post.

Your comments about fuel cells jibe with my own findings precisely.

Best, Earlie

tippet, you are actually writing what I was posting, fuel cells are several years out in technology but their stocks which doubled in a month are not ........... and further as anything in science and R&D nothing is assured of success.

I bet you that very few realize that fuel cells concept was around for over 100 years. This present craze reminds me of the latest superconductor craze at room temperature several years back.

.......... and BTW I accept your offer <VBG> ...... when I can start?

tippet, one advantage of fuel cells for the home is they can provide electricity and heat/AC at once. A fuel-cell company in Canada, Global Thermoelectric (t.gle) has partnered with a home heating company (Enbridge - t.enb) to provide combined furnace/generators for the home market. Enbridge is selling furnaces anyway, so why not sell furnaces that also produce electric power? This is also basically what Plug Power is doing, although I don't like their technology as much. I'm not hyping these companies, I'm just pointing out another use for fuel cells. They can be used either as furnaces, or as central AC units, using the waste heat from the fuel cell to drive a heat exchanger.
