Chris, I don't defend the old Hawaiian way of life. Henry Opukahaia was from Kealakekua, here on the Big Island. The early missionaries he sent here from New England were swarmed by Hawaiians who willingly accepted the grace of God over their superstitious kapu system.

Many Hawaiians believe in a past they don't even understand. The kings and chiefs had it easy. The rest were your garden variety slave. Their history is a bloody one, marked by treason, wars, etc. My point was simply that once the islands were consolidated by Kamehameha(with the help of mercenary Europeans), the rape and pillage of Hawaii began in earnest by the Europeans. When Queen Lilioukalani embraced Christ and his merciful ways, she became a protector to the Hawaiians that remained and conversely a threat to the European traders. they simply stole the Kingdom and arrested her. She wrote a beautiful song of forgiveness for her conquerors which is still sung in many churches throughout Hawaii today. This type of behavior by "reasoning" men doesn't strike me as an evolutionary bright spot. Taking advantage of lesser educated peoples for economic gain...hmmm? Of course, many people blame the missionaries, even though they arrived decades after Capt. Cook, the whalers, and numerous other carpetbagger types and had little to do with the pillaging that went on except that in Lahaina they used to harbor Hawaiian girls to protect them from the gang raping whalers that plagued Lahaina.
