tippet, think of it the other way around: the electricity is a by-product of the heat. Everybody in a northern climate has a furnace in their house anyway. Now if that furnace happens to also produce electricity while it's running, that's power for free (in the sense that it comes at no additional cost compared to just running a furnace), even if it's not produced as efficiently as central station power. (Assuming the fuel cell furnace isn't too expensive; that might be the catch.)
