In a system of laws you get lawyers pushing the limits. It happens in every thread of the American fabric of justice. I would welcome reforms but they would need to be systemic and not piecemeal.

Isn't that their job description?
As for patents, if the process is too easy, too much an obvious extension of existing knowledge, then it is easily fought. Either the process is significant or the oil companies have a private agreement to toss money to Unocal for some benefit Unocal provides them. I used to work for an oil service company and there was a lot of back scratching, but WDIK.
