CyberWorks' Li Delays CEO Decision Until Results Are Reported for Fiscal 2002

Dow Jones Newswires

HONG KONG -- Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. Chairman Richard Li may not give up his duties as chief executive until after the company reports full-year results early next year.

A company spokeswoman said Friday that Mr. Li had put off the decision until then as he grapples with the ongoing task of integrating the operations of PCCW (PCW) and Hong Kong's dominant telecommunications provider. PCCW completed the acquisition of Hong Kong's biggest telephone company, then Cable & Wireless HKT, last August.

On Thursday, Mr. Li confirmed he may consider recruiting a managing director or chief executive to help in day-to-day operations, but said he plans to remain chairman.

Mr. Li said "we just had one transition, and right now I just have to stick with it and get it done for the first year, because we've merged the two companies and now we're fine-tuning it, and to make another transition right now is really not wise."

According to Joan Wagner, PCCW's head of corporate communications, Mr. Li said a new CEO could come from either inside or outside the company and would be someone with a strong customer orientation. "That is more important than a relevant telecom background," Mr. Li said.
