"If it can run (barely) at 1GHz at .18, isn't 1.2GHz at .13 pretty much in the bag? Probably higher, as well, but they don't want to make the P4 look bad
by comparison."

Like I said to Jim..."should be able to's" just haven't cut it at INTC over the past 2 years...Who knows what the P3 will be competing against when/if INTC works out the production kinks in going to .13...AMD certainly isn't static in its rolling out of new leading edge product...Seems to me the trend over the past 2 years has been an increasing price/performance gap favouring AMD...and the recent Athon 4 intro., if indicative of trends going forward, looks to continue this favourable AMD trend for the foreseeable future...

RE:"NG, well come on, they ought to get *something* out of shrinking the P3 down to .13u."

Well, Amd only got about 50-100 Mhz out of shinking the K6-2 from .25u to .18u. When ole' betsy is at the end of the line, she's at the end of the line.
At 1.2 Ghz, Tualatin may be near her last legs.

Perhaps this is one of the things that could be wrong with P3.
What's rather interesting is that fact that Intel chose to convert the P3 to .13u ahead of P4 or even at all. This is an indication that P4 is not anywhere near ready for primetime yet. No SMP, high heat, Rambus,no notebook chip and Athlon at higher speeds than P3. Intel had no choice but to get some more life out of ole' betsy.
