The Emotion chip was 238 mm^2 plus a companion graphics chip which was even larger. IIRC, yield or production problems caused a slower PS2 rollout than Sony had planned.

The article is quite dated but estimated a production cost for the two chips of $130 each so the PS2 was definitely a "give away the razor and sell the razor blades" type of product as most consumer inkjets are these days.
