Cisco is #1 in switching. The nearest one is Extreme and Foundary. Cisco is really strong in Enterprise as they have an end-to-end product portfolio. The realy advantage that Cisco has is the all the products have a consistent CLI unlike 3Com, Nortel or others.

In core I believe Cisco's product marketting goofed up big time and now Cisco is paying the price. Hopefully they will get their act together. BTW, I have worked on both Cisco GSR and Juniper routers, both have pluses and minuses but in my opnion Cisco has a better architecture and more stable product compared to Juniper. However Juniper had a head start when they came up with OC-192 linecard. Cisco is catching up now.

Victor: as I mentioned a month ago, right now Cisco's main competitor is used Cisco equipment, because it attacks Cisco's main competitive advantage (compatibility with other proprietary Cisco equipment).

In markets where Cisco does not compete, they are ringed with competitors. In the most lucrative growth markets (e.g wireless & optical), Cisco is only a token presence compared to where they need to be.
