<off topic - solution to the following puzzle>
And lastly, another fun logic puzzle:
There are five (5) houses on a block, each of a different color, each inhabited by a man of a different nationality. The inhabitants differ from one another in other respects:
-the beverages they drink -the pets they keep -the fast food they eat
In addition, the following facts are true:
1. The Englishman lives in the Red House. 2. The Spaniard owns a dog. 3. Coffee is drunk in the Green house. 4. The Ukranian drinks tea. 5. The Green house is just right of the Ivory House. 6. The pizza eater owns snails. 7. The hamburger eater lives in the Yellow House. 8. Milk is drunk in the middle house. 9. The Norwegian lives in the first house. 10. The man who eats Spam lives in the house next to the man with the fox. 11. Hamburgers are eaten in the house next to the house where the hourse is kept. 12. The people that eat Sub sandwiches drink orange juice. 13. The Japanese eat KFC. 14. The Norwegian lives next door to the blue house.
Questions: Who drinks water? Who owns the Zebra?
- Jeff ragingbull.lycos.com
It appears that a few additional assumptions are implicit: - In fact #9, "first house" refers to the leftmost house. - A zebra is one of the five pets and water is one of the five beverages.
The solution will refer to the houses from left to right as H1 through H5 respectively.
A. H2 is blue (facts 9 and 14).
B. H1 is not green (5), or ivory (5 and A) or red (1 and 9) or blue (A). Since the other four possibilities are eliminated, H1 is yellow.
C. Hamburger is eaten in H1 (7 and B).
D. The pet in H2 is a horse (11 and C).
E. The beverage in H1 is not tea (4 and 11), not coffee (3 and B), not milk (8), and not orange juice (12 and C). By elimination, the beverage in H1 is water. Since the occupant of H1 is Norwegian (9), the Norwegian is the water drinker.
F. The beverage in H2 is not water (E), not milk (8), not coffee (3 and A) so it is either orange juice or tea.
G. The occupant of H2 is not Norwegian (9), not English (1 and A) and not Spanish (2 and D). Thus he is Japanese or Ukranian.
H. If orange juice is the H2 beverage then sub sandwiches are eaten in H2 (12) so H2's occupant is not Japanese (13) and hence must be Ukranian (G). OTOH if tea is the H2 beverage then the occupant of H2 is Ukranian (4). Since the H2 beverage is either orange juice or tea (F), the occupant of H2 is Ukranian.
I. Tea is the H2 beverage (4 and H).
J. The fast food in H2 is not hamburger (C). not pizza (6 and D), not KFC (13 and H) and not subs (12 and I). Therefore the fast food in H2 is the sole remaining choice: spam.
K. The fox is either in H1 or H3 (10 and J).
L. The pizza eater with snails (6) is not Norwegian (9 and C), not Ukranian (H and J), not Japanese (13) and not Spanish (2). By elimination he is English.
M. The English beverage is not water (E). not tea (H and I), not coffee (1 and 3) and not orange juice (12 and L). Therefore it is milk.
N. The H3 occupant is English (8 and M) and hence the H3 color is red (1), the H3 pets are snails (8 and L) and the H3 fast food is pizza (8 and L).
O. The H1 pet is a fox (K and N).
Since the only remaining house colors to be assigned are ivory and green and the green house is right of the ivory house (5): P. H4 is ivory and H5 is green.
Q. The H5 beverage is coffee (3 and P).
R. The H4 beverage is orange juice (all other possibilities have been ruled out in E, I, 8, and Q).
S. The H4 fast food is sub sandwiches (12).
T. The H5 fast food is KFC (all other possibilities have been ruled out in C, J, N and S).
U. The occupant of H5 is Japanese (13 and T).
V. The occupant of H4 is not Norwegian (9), not Ukranian (H), not English (N) and not Japanese (U), He is therefore Spanish and thus the H4 pet is a dog (2).
W. The H5 pet is not a fox (O), not a horse (D), not snails (N) and not a dog (V). Therefore it is a zebra. Since the H5 occupant is Japanese, the Japanese owns the Zebra.
Though it was probably unnecessary, the solution has determined all attributes (house color, nationality, beverage, pet, and fast food) of the five houses. They are: H1: yellow, Norwegian, water, fox, hamburger H2: blue, Ukranian, tea, horse, spam H3: red, English, milk, snails, pizza H4: ivory, Spanish, orange juice, dog, sub sandwiches H5: green, Japanese, coffee, zebra, KFC |
