Can you fill in a gap in my faulty memory?

I think that there is an English saying of two or three lines whose last line goes something like 'but there's never _______ for today'. The blank is something meant to be desired. The broad overall meaning is that promises are commonplace, but delivery to a promise is rare. Earlier lines likely include something like 'there's always _______ for tomorrow'.

Can you provide the full saying, assuming that it exists and is not just an American myth about an English saying? -g-
