You may have noticed gas prices spiked in Summer '96 to try to help unseat Slick Willie, and again in Summer '00. Both times prices came back down as soon as the outcry became tinged with cries of politics.

The decks are now cleared for another raid on US economy by the Party of Unearned Income. In the '80s it was the taxkilling Raygun and the Trickledowns. Now it's President Possum and his Oil Men. Don't let them fool you into believing that it's the price of oil, that's just their cover. The percentage of the price of a gallon of gas that is represented by the cost of crude is not great, and, owing to improvements in efficiency of refineries, etc., is about where it has been historically.

What we will see is the price coming down in about May of 2004, so that PP and Deadeye Dick can claim the credit. Meantime, well, if you can't can grab your ankles, start doing some stretching exercises.

Political cowardice... 'White House report was also careful to spell out its goal of boosting efficiency "without negatively impacting the U.S. automotive industry." '
