You touched upon so many topics that I can't do them all justice. I didn't realize you read "Der Spiegel". I only check occasionally to see how out of touch with German concerns I am. The price for superior water conservation goes to the inhabitants of whatever planet is described in the novel "Dune". Even water from the deceased was recycled.

I agree on energy conservation being the near term answer. Most households could probably save 10% without hardship; even more if energy saving appliances are used. And lets turn those air conditioners off, except for public places. [easy for me because we don't have one. Thank God for shade trees].
