The less involvement the better, the US and more specifically the Bush family and it's advisers are clue less as to the Arab mentality and the powers involved.

Present US Secretary of State made more blunders in the ME that one can imagine and still he is counted as an "hero" which he does not deserve. Those making Desert Storm a success, ...... vanished in public obscurity ......... now that is a great job of PR and discrimination.

Fact! we are over 11 years since the Kuwait invasion, Saddam is still in power and a treat to western civilization, Kuwait and all other emirates Saudi Arabia included are ruled by clan families in power and did not advance in their quest of western values or civilization.

Afghanistan is completely radical Islam, followed by Iran, and Pakistan close to it and both have the nuclear bomb. Well that is a hell lot to contribute to world stability.

Syria Egypt Libya are all on status quo. In Algiers 20 to 100 people are massacred each week in the name of ISLAM.

The Desert Storm war was a unique opportunity to fold the ME into Western Culture but is failed the reason quite simple - US mistakes and the fact that people there, are still clinging to mediaeval values at the same time they consume and enjoy the advances of western civilization.

The CNBC series on the "Prince" only reinforced that theory. .......... and he is possibly one of the more nice and westernized people around in Saudi Arabia........ but still bribes in form of fat fees made him rich, more so than his investment accumen. (Besides C or DIS he invested in Dona Karen, and Price Line at very high prices)

The key in the ME is to get rid of the old guard - family rule and terrorist rule and migrate toward true democracy this process will take at least a generation if not more.

I think you are simply offering a rationalization (frankly, I expected to hear this out of the financial press and was just trying to figure out why I didn't -- I think I know why) -- gold's rise with at the same time as this is just coincidence or correlation -- not the cause.

We've had a series of skirmishes and gold went nowhere -- something else is at work here -- I have some hunches, but I'm loathe to discuss. I won't convince you or anybody else, but I'm comfortably posiitioned given my own read on things.

Do you believe the leasing, central bank sales, derivatives and the like have in recent history become serious drivers of the gold price or not?

(I will leave you with this -- I think it is very possible that energy prices become less of a concern 12 - 18 months out and gold still rises considerably from these levels ...)
