You may very well see Silicon Valley, as well as the emerging biotech industry, dispersing itself around the country to more human-friendly political environments like Texas (as well as other states). The general level of taxes is the easiest and most visible gauge. State regulations and a business-friendly environment quickly come to light, also. Boeing has recently figured this out.

Currently, high tech has developed in areas where the best tech-oriented universities are. That is a rather 19th-Century concept. Most of the students at those universities have already re-located from around the world. In the emerging world of the telecosm, you don't have to live your life in Palo Alto if you can be more comfortable and less taxed elsewhere. California is doing greater damage to itself than it realizes...

I have only been to your big cities in Texas. Not bad, not great. I like Austin quite a bit. How are the hinterlands? You folks got any hills? Any nice oaks and hickories, a place where a guy can just go in and get lost and enjoy the woods? Or is it just flat and hot like the dang Sahara?

Peter,

We also have no state income tax here

I had 3.6% property tax in Austin. I'll take our 5% income tax in Colorado over that, any day. (And no fire ants.)

I doubt that you are going to see a lot of people moving from California or Colorado to Texas.
