Gunmen kill Sunni Muslim leader, 4 others 05/18/2001 - Updated 10:38 AM ET KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Riots broke out after gunmen shot and killed a top Sunni Muslim leader and five of his companions Friday in what was believed to be the latest incident of religiously motivated violence in this restive port city. Saleem Qadri, leader of a Muslim organization called Sunni Tehrik, was on his way to a mosque for Friday prayers when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle from close range in the neighborhood of Baldia Town. Qadri, his guard and four relatives died in the attack. His 10-year-old son and two others, including his 8-year-old nephew, were critically wounded, police said. The gunmen fled after the attack and no arrests were made. Hundreds of Qadri's supporters rioted outside the hospital where his dead body was taken. They wailed, smashed car windows and beat doctors and policemen. Police tried to disperse the rioters with tear gas. In recent months scores of people have been killed throughout Pakistan in religious violence. Most killings are the result of rivalry between extremist Sunni Muslim and Shiite Muslim groups. But often hardline Sunni Muslim factions also target each other. Qadri's Sunni Tehrik, considered a nonviolent religious group, has sharp differences with rival Sunni Muslim organizations. Sunni Muslims, a majority in Islamic Pakistan, are divided into several schools of thought, often at loggerheads over small religious issues such as dress or beard length.nytimes.com Friday's assault occurs as Pakistan's military-led government struggles to curb the religious and political violence that kills hundreds every year
