I only provided them for YOUR BENEFIT, not mine. But let's talk history here. Which nation has the right to call themselves a state? And where do they derive that right from? As you stated, the Arab Legion was formed to fight the Turks. The Ottomans had ruled ALL OF PALESTINE since the year 1516. Before that Palestine was ruled by the Mamluks, slave warriors who came to dominate over their original Ayyubsid masters after repelling the Mongol hordes in 1260. So let's face some facts here... There is no basis for ANY MID-EAST NATION, to make any sort of claim of "liberation" by the British, or justifying their existence as a nation/state. Each nation in the mid-east OWES their existence to the good "graces" of those powers who ruled them to grant them independence (OF COURSE, the insistence of the United States to force post WWII decolonization played a MAJOR PART). Had the British been willing to continue their exploitive colonization, ignoring US pressure, the Mid-East would STILL be under British rule. And rightfully so because they spent the manpower and national treasure to conquer that territory and taking it from the Turks. Or the British could have given the territory back to Turkey, since they essentially held the longest claim (400 years) over the region. So while you emphasize the role of the Arab Legion in defeating the Turks, once the Turks were defeated, the role of the Legion should have ended as well. But no.. it stayed in place to deny the Jews THEIR rightful reward of nationhood for the role THEY PLAYED in defeating the Turks. And since the Brits were interested in the oil wealth of the region, they armed and trained it (as well the rest of Jordan's military). And on top of that the Jews supported Britain against the Nazis, while the Arabs (in Iraq, Egypt, and Palestine) supported Hitler. Yet, now they are being told by the Arabs to give up the econony they have built from scratch, and the land they rightfully purchased from previous Arab owners. Now is that fair? The bottom line here is that THERE IS NO RIGHT AND WRONG TO BE FOUND, but only a battle of wills. Since these mid-east states have no more legitimacy than any other nation, to support their right to exist, they rely upon their will. And I'll put up Israeli will to win and survive up against the Palestinians and Arabs ANY DAY of the year. You can hide behind legal niceties to make whatever point you desire. But the reality is that in the mid-east, where there is only one state that can call itself a democracy, might makes right. And the Israelis have the might (and the nukes). And no Arab nation is willing to go "over the brink" and engage in anther war with Israel. They would prefer a guerilla war that would sap Israeli will over time. And now the Isralis are escalating the situation to the point where they are calling a few Arab "bluffs". Either force Hamas and the other extremists to cease their violence, or Israel will launch the entire region into another all-out war. Methinks Arafat is going to have a tough time convincing any Arab state to go to the mat for him. Hawk
