Well, don't feel too bad, Knighty, you had the right idea:

Message 15804705

I had Congaree and Point Given across the board, along with some token exacta money on each over the other, and came out ahead.

Those d*mn out of the money options (exactas) will getcha every time!<G>

Point Given should do well in the Belmont, looked like he had lots left at the end.

KT....

I've got a handful of paper for the recycling bin. All my tickets had Monarchos in them. I used him as my key horse. Exacta at #80 something wasn't bad at all.

Well, looking to the Belmont, Monarchos should be at least 5 or 6-1. But as they say about stocks, never fall in love with one. Same goes for horses.

Good talking to you all on this board. We are becoming, unfortunately, a small, select group (most of us aging) who love a great sport and the challenge and thrill of picking a winner.

BTW, if you haven't yet, pick up a copy of "Seabiscuit." The book is a good read, not a page-turner, but a brilliant job of research and deservedly on the best-seller lists.

Best regards

Lef

KT,

I didn't see the race. I was at friend's birthday party on a boat and had one of those old mini black and white TVs with me. I could barely see anything, but I heard the call.

The race caller said that Congaree got off badly, but I don't know how much of an excuse that was - probably cost him the place slot. The pace wasn't too fast, but if he rushed up sharply into contention, perhaps it took more out of him than that. I'll have to see the replay.

No shock that the real Point Given showed up. This has happened so may times in the Preakness. Over the years a lot of Derby contenders that showed nothing in the Derby came back and fired their best shot in the Preakness. I have no theory as to why that happens. If they had bad trips etc.. then it would make sense, but often that's not the case. Maybe some horses can't deal with all the hoopla and big fields in Kentucky. In any event, I think Point Given's race was extremely impressive. The pace was very moderate and based on the chart he made a huge move from behind to win. I think he's the best of the generation right now.

I don't know what Chavez was thinking on Monarchos unless the horse was simply very dull. He had no chance to win from there in a race that everyone expected to have a slow to moderate pace.

Based on the chart, Dollar Bill's performance looks pretty good. He ws shuffled back and made a nice run very wide.

I didn't wager because when I left home Congaree was 5/2 - but I did have a cell phone just on case I had a change of heart. :-) One more tick up in price and I would have made the call. I was wrong, but fortunately it only cost me ego.
