My bias extends only so far as I believe Israel has a right to exist, something few Arabs are willing to acknowledge (which is echoed by their constants threats to destroy it).

I also believe that a Palestinian state would be alright as well (although I believe Jordan represents this reality far more than the West Bank) so long as security concerns for Israel are acknowledged.

We're talking about artificial states carved out of the remnants of the Ottoman Empire, with boundaries arbitarily determined by a former colonial power, Britain.

Since the Jews were promised the Yishuv AND Judea and Samaria as a reward for their support of Britain in WWI and WWII, I see no problem with them occupying it, ESPECIALLY since the west bank had been previous annexed by Jordan. And Jewish support was INDISPENSABLE since they were located in the vital transportation zones near the coast.

This annexation ALSO deprived the Palestinian "partition" any opportunity to declare their own independence. However, the Jordanian King, Abdullah, knew that a Palestinian state on the West Bank would undermine his own legitimacy over the Palestinian people of Jordan.

And when his son, King Hussein, foolishly believed the bald-faced lies that Nasser and Radio Cairo were putting out about their success against the Israelis during the early hours of the 1967 6-day war, he decided to hop on the band wagon and attack Israel (DESPITE pleas from the Israeli Prime Minister NOT to get involved). Thus, the moment Jordan attacked Israel, they lost any right over the West Bank.

After all, this is how the Ottoman Turks lost their Mid-East territories, namely by allying themselves with the Kaiser and Austro-Hungarian Empire during WWI.

A funny story about the 6-day war though... It seems that Nasser was having a hard time trying to explain how 90% of his entire air force had been destroyed in 7 minutes on the morning of June 5th, 1967. So he gets on the phone with Hussein a day later (after his generals finally admitted to him the true level of destruction that had occurred), and they're talking about how to handle the situation. So Nasser comes up with the idea of blaming the US and/or Britain for participating in the attacks and helping to destroy Egypt's air force. When asked by Nasser whether he should claim it was the US, or both the US and Britain, Hussein told him to say "both"..

And that's what Nasser did...

Unfortunately, neither Nasser or Hussein realized that their phone conversation was being intercepted by the Israeli Signal Corps.....<VBG>

This is the mentality of the Arab leadership then, AND NOW... they will say anything to cover their own butts and explain how they have lead their nations into repeated defeat by a Jewish nation, smaller in geography and population to themselves.

And yes, attritional warfare has been the strategy. It gained Arafat and the Palestinian Authority control over 95% of the West Bank (RIGHT NOW). But despite the fact that they now possess all of that territory, it apparently still isn't enough.

Here's a map for those who might not be familiar with the boundaries of the PA:

Btw, I served for 14 years in the military, with the earliest part of that in combat arms, and all of it serving with combat units.

Can you say the same?
