Leibowitz was indeed a great man, I had the uncommon privilege to study in one of his classes (and one of his many children was a classmate). I think that the "mainstream" of Israeli agree with him that occupation of the west bank is unwise. Jewish soldiers never made good "occupying powers". It was supposed to be a "temporary situation" and a "bargaining chip" with Jordan and the Palestinian. It just took a long time until the Palestinian agreed to take out of their "Manifesto" the goal of eradicating the Jewish state. And I doubt any one counted on Hussein not really wanting to take back the West Bank. Barak's offer was leading to the end of that "occupation" (and right now, most of the Palestinians do not see an occupying soldier, unless they shoot at them through the border), at least in what they call "Area A". Yes there are religious zealots on both sides, but it is up to the rational people on both side to show the way to prosperity.
