Nortel Networks Grabs Lead in Fast-Growing Service Provider WAN Switching Market

Q4 2000 Analyst Reports Indicate Nortel Networks Leads Overall Global
Market as Well

BOSTON – Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] achieved the #1 position in
global WAN (wide area networking) switching – including the top spot in the
fast-growing service provider segment – for the fourth quarter of 2000,
according to recent reports from Cahners In-Stat, Synergy Research Group
and the Dell’Oro Group.

Nortel Networks Passport* multiservice WAN switches led in all categories
tracked by Cahners In-Stat, including multiservice, ATM (asynchronous
transfer mode) and frame relay for service providers and enterprises.

“Nortel Networks Passport sales were extremely impressive, particularly in
multiservice WAN switching for service providers, the fastest growing
segment of the market,” said Henry Goldberg, senior analyst, Cahners
In-Stat Group. “Nortel Networks led this segment with a 30 percent share in
the fourth quarter.”

“Multiservice WAN switches are enabling the proliferation of next generation
services such as IP (Internet Protocol), wireless and packetized voice,” said
Emmy Johnson, principal analyst, Synergy Research Group. “They will play
a key role in the build-out of infrastructure solutions for service providers in
the coming years. Through its Passport solutions, Nortel Networks is taking
advantage of this trend.”

The versatility, reliability and scalability of Nortel Networks Passport portfolio
enable service providers to invest in a single packet infrastructure, and to
pursue new, revenue-generating opportunities beyond traditional data
services. Continuing to evolve with market needs, Passport is redefining
traditional multiservice networking with new technologies like multi-protocol
label switching (MPLS).

“Passport’s solutions focus presents a winning value proposition to our
customers, offering the ability to extend the core attributes of a traditional
multiservice switch and provide wireless, voice and access solutions to
customer networks worldwide,” said Marco Pagani, Passport portfolio chair,
Nortel Networks.

Passport switches offer industry-leading port densities and carrier-grade
reliability in addition to multiservice capabilities. Nortel Networks Passport
multiservice WAN switch portfolio includes the Passport 15000, Passport
7400 and Passport 6400 series.
