Electricity usage in air conditioned spaces can see some dramatic changes, though, since the energy used by lighting and appliances is dissipated as heat that must then be removed

Dan, that was Pete's post re cutting usage by half. Nonetheless, I agree with your comments. I don't think people fully realized all the ways consumption can be cut.
