When I was at CMOS, cost of test was a major buzz word. I was in the area of linear, mixed signal, and RF testing. In these areas we had a low cost tester and further major improvements in cost were being pushed in the packaging and handling areas. Customers wanted parallel interface to more than one handler and handlers were starting to process strips of chips instead of individual chips. I don't know or understand the directions for memeory, logic, or system on a chip.

Convertible notes take advantage of current low rates and compensate for relatively low prices. For the company it is a short term, low interest loan paid back later with appreciated (the conversion premium) stock. What surprises me is the supposed need for capital. During slowdowns, AR and inventory should fall, freeing up cash. The companies issuing the debt either believe an upturn is coming soon or are worried about their short term financial condition.
