>> Think Tank Trims 3-G Market Size Forecast

A domestic think tank for the third-generation telecommunications industry slashed its earlier forecast for global market size to 62% of its earlier projection.

According to the IT Technology Management Research Institute, which is part of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Friday, the number of subscribers to the IMT-2000 service is expected to reach only 160 million in 2005 due to postponement by W-CDMA service by major global service providers and their sagging share prices.

The ETRI think tank had forecast early last year that the market would reach 250 million subscribers by that time.

The institute estimated that the projected number of CDMA 2000 subscribers will be divided into about 94 million for W-CDMA service and 63 million for CDMA service. This approximate 6 to 4 ratio between the two services also represented a revision of the institute's earlier forecast of the 8:2 distribution in favor of W-CDMA.
