According to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, spending on gold exploration has halved in the past three years following the slump in US dollar gold prices.

Dr Close said while tax deductibility was available for investment in a swag of highly specialised primary production schemes, their potential export earnings were tiny in comparison to the gold industry.
