QUALCOMM Incorporated, pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the on-time sample shipping of the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) CSM5500 Cell-Site Modem (CSM) integrated circuit and system software, a high-capacity and high-speed solution that supports the new third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1x Evolution Data Only (1xEV-DO) standard, optimized for wireless data communications, using a spectrally efficient 1.25 megahertz (MHz) channel to provide peak data throughput of 2.4 megabits per second (Mbps) on the forward link. The 1xEV-DO standard evolved from QUALCOMM's development of High Data Rate (HDR) technology and provides the lowest cost-per-bit of any announced technology for wireless high-speed data transmission, including General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Wideband CDMA (WCDMA).

"The CSM5500 solution provides wireless infrastructure operators with the most advanced 3G solution available for high-speed wireless Internet services, and the on-time sampling of the CSM5500 integrated circuit and API software proves our commitment to enable high-speed data at the lowest cost," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "Our on-time delivery of 3G 1xEV-DO solutions, both on the infrastructure and the handset sides, emphasizes our dedication to our 1xEV-DO customers. Wireless equipment manufacturers and carriers are already working on products, applications and services that use the capabilities provided by our 1xEV-DO solutions, which are helping to drive the development and deployment of 3G systems worldwide."

The CSM5500 device is an end-to-end tested 1xEV-DO solution that is verified against QUALCOMM's MSM5500 Mobile Station Modem (MSM) 1xEV-DO integrated circuit, and is a pin-and package-compatible replacement for existing 1xEV trial systems, offering substantial cost and power savings. Each CSM5500 device can operate in one of three modes - modulator, demodulator or decoder. The CSM5500 modulator can support up to three sectors on the forward link. Each CSM5500 demodulator can support 24 channel elements on the reverse link. A single CSM5500 turbo decoder can support the decoding needs across all three sectors.

Production quantities of the CSM5500 integrated circuit and system software are expected to be available during the third quarter of calendar 2001. <<
