Free Money Means Banks Will Line Up to Lend: Caroline Baum
By Caroline Baum

New York, May 16 (Bloomberg) -- With the overnight cost of borrowing at 4 percent and the consumer price index showing a 3.3 percent increase in April from a year earlier, banks' real cost of borrowing is fast approaching zero.

What does that mean? When banks can get free money from the Federal Reserve and earn 100 basis points buying risk-free Treasury securities maturing in five years, a profit-maximizing institution should swoop up as many as it can get.

...which is exactly what they ARE doing, even though BubbleBoy insisted they shouldn't "go out and buy Treasury Bonds". More string-pushing in other words. The banksters want that risk-free return, and BubbleBoy is giving it to them (at the price of inflation for all of US later this year).

The Green man is nuts!!!

He's putting money into the system at the rate of the 1970's when we had EXTREME inflation! The bond market sees what's happening. Gold may be seeing what's happening. Al Yankovich Greenboy must be senile or simply he has given up and adopted the Clinton mentality of, "screw them all - by the time they know what hit them, I'll be gone." Corporations have all but taken out ads saying business is lousy and WILL be lousy for the rest of this year AND probably NEXT year -- ie Autodesk saying profits will FALL in 2002.

EVERYTHING points to a recession, but no one will call it. Credit card defaults are skyrocketing, oil sits near $30, unemployment remains ar recessionary levels, the trade deficit keeps setting records (can we ask China's permission to pee yet?), and the best performing sector is GOLD! Yet, Mr. Greenjeans continues to print money and push the good ol USA toward inflation -- yeah, right, I know the experts say it doesn't exist.

I won't get off on a tangent about prophecy, but if you will keep your eyes on Israel, you will get the first glimpse at what is going to push the economy and the world over the edge of prosperity worship. Israel is bombing the westbank -- not since the 60's has this happened! Keep watching. The surprise is coming.

I remain,
