That's the question isn't it??? Why are they crashing???

Athlon crashes while P4 doesn't and you trash P4.

Your lack of objectivity is clear.

Introduction

There are many factors that affect Geforce stability. In order to get the most from your GeForce you need to start with the basics and build from there. Some things that you might think are insignificant may have a profound effect on the stability of your system.

The problem with stability of the Athlon / GeForce combination is not the video card or the CPU, it is the chipset on the motherboard. The AMD chipset used on the ASUS K7M and the MSI 6167 and
6195 (K7Pro) gives the GeForce fits!
The VIA apollo chipset (KX133) used on the ASUS K7V and the Abit KA7 seems to be much more reliable as well as providing the option for 4x AGP. If you have an AMD-based system I would strongly suggest switching to a VIA-based motherboard.

The system described in these pages is based on a GeForce 256 DDR and an overclocked Athlon CPU on a motherboard with an AMD chipset - probably the most incompatible combination you could build. Click HERE for system Specs. Although this is an Athlon system, the information provided here should apply to some extent to Intel based systems also. The AMD Athlon K7 is a power hungry CPU. Combine that with a video card that needs lots of power to survive and you have yourself a combination that is a power supply's nightmare!

A bigger power supply (more wattage) may not be enough. This type of hardware requires alot of amps to operate correctly. Installation and configuration are the keys to successful operation and may be the difference between a virtually unusable system and an enjoyable system that you've worked so hard to build.

To start enjoying your system, follow this guide step by step and follow the instructions on the next few pages. Even if you have a reliable system this guide will help you get the most performance from your combination and further solidify your system's reliability. If your system is different than the one described then use common sense when applying this information to your specific setup. In other words, if you have a motherboard with an Intel chipset, do not install the AMD drivers. Install the drivers for the chipset built into your motherboard.

If you are the proud owner of an Athlon K7 or you are planning to build one then do yourself a favor and buy a power supply listed on AMD's recommended power supply list! It may cost a little more but you will be happier in the long run. I speak from experience!
