You have to reconcile your argument against the backdrop of the futures markets. If everyone expects gold/gas to drop after a certain date you would see backwardation in the futures.

BACKWARDATION - A market where the price of near delivery months is at a premium to more
distant months.

If that is the case, then you have described a scenario as to why the run in gold is occurring now, and chances are it will fall after June 1, or before. If this evenings spike was the peak, no one should be too surprised.

I was taking a guess. I would have thought the amount of gold used for jewelry was not sufficent enough to make an impact on its price.

Since you know this, why don't you take advantage of it and be sure to not buy during this time when the price gets manipulated? There are plenty of other suckers hanging around.

I like to buy what I can see but I really do not need the product until September. I typically work out a deal where I get invoiced based on the price of the time of shipping in late August or early September. Sometimes this is good but not always. Diamonds are always higher now and that is not a manufacturing issue. DeBeers has change the way they are allocating sites so I am not sure how I want to handle that. This will be the first time in my carreer DeBeers claims not to have a monopoly although it still feels like a monopoly to me. I am going to have to think this through.

The whole thing smacks of what the gas boys do to us every June, too. The price ALWAYS falls in the fall, when we drive fewer miles.

The best time to buy gold for years now has been the last few days of December, imo.

I agree with this completely. The problem is from my end one ties up money for more than nine months before one sells a significant part of the inventory.

I believe I will go in my hole and think for a while LOL.
