Yes, I don't believe it's a British holiday too.

Victoria Day commemorates Victoria Radisson, the first female coureur de bois who amongst other things invented hand soap, which was later adopted in Quebec in 1972. She pioneered female employment equity, and was instrumental developing the first courier service and bush telegraph using Samuel Morse's recently developed army code, pounding out a tattoo on hollow logs. Since the logs could not send short and long they had to use different length's of log for different tones. This presaged frequency shift key methods. She was also credited with starting the first chicken ranch and whiskey still in Boisvert, Manitoba. Her life's story was penned by Susanna Moody in a Canadian Classic called "I Live in the Woods".

BTW, speaking of books a really good one is called Freegold, the Story of Canadian Mining, by Hoffman, McGraw Hill. I couldn't put it down. This may have been because of the glue on the dust cover but there were some interesting stories there nevertheless.
