OT: GM plans in improving fuel economy ... similar to the way mobile processors throttle back ... to conserve power.

Looks like patent infringement to me! Can anyone forward this to Intel Legal?

T, GM has done this before. The history isn't exactly something you'd want to cite as a precedent, though it may be appropriate for the alleged ghz Piii mobile.

In 1981 when gas prices were rising, General Motors introduced
the V8-6-4 engine in selected Cadillacs. A powerplant designed to
function with either four, six or eight cylinders, it was based on
driver need--all eight cylinders when climbing a hill or pulling out to
pass, only four cylinders when cruising along the interstate to the
vacation retreat.

The engine couldn't make up its mind whether it wanted to operate
in four, six or eight cylinder mode. During this state of confusion the
engine vibrated and typically limped home in four cylinder mode. It
only lasted a year before being dropped from the lineup.

Ten - re: "GM plans truck engines that idle cylinders:"

These fools !

They tried something like this with a 2/4/8 Cadillac engine about 20 years ago.

That lasted about 1 model season.
