why the past tense ("were") ? dont you know them anymore ? or did they change their beliefs ?

Simply a failing of English to have a past imperfect tense to indicate something that was true in the past and continues to be true in the future. I don't have connections with some of these people any more, so I can't genuinely claim to "know" them in the present tense, but that is the only qualification intended.
