So Percival, a principal with e-marketplace Internet Design Center, canceled service from financially troubled PSINet last month in favor of Sprint--even though Sprint's DSL package costs almost three times PSINet's fixed wireless service.internetweek.com Monday, May 7, 2001, 10:24 AM ET. BellSouth, Verizon To Raise DSL rates By Jade Boyd Verizon Communications and BellSouth are following the lead of other broadband service providers by hiking prices for their basic high-speed Internet services. Verizon Friday raised the rates of its basic consumer DSL service to $50 per month, and BellSouth raised the price of its lowest priced service package to $45 per month. SBC Communications and Earthlink raised the price for their basic service plans to $50 within recent weeks, and AT&T Broadband this week raised the price of its high-speed cable service to $45. internetweek.com ************************* Harry's comment: Increased pricing traction in addition with many companies switching over to ILEC's supports the contention by companies like AFCI that it is a question of when not if, they will deploy more last mile technology. The week delay cited in the article suggest a bottle neck in the process some where. The ability to increase pricing in the slowing economic environment supports the case for more deployment of services that will generate a consistent revenue stream. Usually a specific subsriber level is necessary to pay off the equipment in a short period of time. The pressure is therefore on getting and retaining subscribers. As indicated in the article price is not as important as reliability and access to business customers. That is why they are preferred over the household consumer.
