CAT 5 cabling has become cheap and pervasive - but I recollect that standard CAT 5 cabling won't work on Gigabit Ethernet - making upgrades even more expensive - and painful.

I was purchasing some cabling this past weekend and noticed they are selling something called CAT 5e now. It supports 1000Mbps/1Gbps and costs the same as regular CAT 5.
