All of their stuff still needs to pass the Toll Gate . . .dailynews.yahoo.com Tuesday May 22 01:20 PM EDT Microsoft, Intel Together Again - Windows Media Goes Wireless By Jay Wrolstad, Wireless.NewsFactor.com Software giant Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT - news) has announced that Windows Media is now available for Pocket PC users -- and that the company has joined forces with chip maker Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC - news) to speed the delivery of digital media content. • Report: Wireless Streaming Media Flood Forecast • HomeRF Delivers Multimedia All Through the House • New Sony Clie Puts Multimedia in a PDA As it unveiled a new wireless digital media guide for mobile users, called "WindowsMedia.com Mobile," Microsoft said its Windows Media Player 7.1 is the first complete player to support wireless access to digital audio and video for Pocket PC users, allowing playback of downloaded audio and video content. The player also features Windows Media Audio and Video 8 codec technology for high-quality audio and video in the smallest file size, according to Microsoft. Media Player Upgrade Mobile users now can stream Windows Media audio and video content to a Pocket PC over high-speed wireless Internet access services, such as the Ricochet network or 802.11b (Wi-Fi) wireless local area networks, the company said. Key video improvements include full-screen video playback for home movies or streamed video and updated support for Windows Media Digital Rights Management technology, Microsoft said, including PC integration that enables transfers of digital music files to a Pocket PC. The new Media Player for Pocket PC can be downloaded for use on Compaq iPAQ, HP Jornada and Casio Cassiopeia Pocket PC models. In addition, Microsoft is offering a free Windows Media Play Pack CD -- containing full-length movies, music and music videos; two Pocket PC games; and five new Windows Media Player 7.1 skins -- to the first 10,000 people to order it in the United States and Canada. Each CD will cost US$4.95 after the promotion ends, the company said. 3G Joint Effort Microsoft said its collaboration with Intel is designed to enable delivery of Windows Media audio, video and digital rights management technology through Intel's XScale microarchitecture, allowing the makers of next-generation 2.5G and 3G wireless devices to provide enhanced broadband digital media services. XScale technology has applications for digital phones, PDAs (personal digital assistants) and pagers, as well as for mobile Internet appliances such as Web tablets and industrial handhelds, Intel said. Leg Up on Competition Windows Media will make use of Intel's processors by incorporating Intel IPP, an interface for the development of advanced multimedia applications, Microsoft said. The interface can extend battery life in mobile devices and can help developers reduce time and costs by allowing an application to be sent more quickly to multiple Intel processors, the company said. The partnership gives Windows Media a leg up on the competition for wireless delivery of streaming and downloadable music and video, Microsoft said, including transmission via GPRS (general packet radio service) networks under construction in Europe, Asia and the United States and via upcoming 3G UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system) networks
