the auto industry can be relied upon to float all sorts of misinformation to get the price down...fact is, there is no viable alternative to the pgm's in catalyst land.

since palladium and platinum are now trading at almost the same level, substituting one with the other makes no sense anymore...

Well fuel-cells could be used for stationary non-automotive applications. But the platinum used in a fuel cell to power a car can be offset by no need for a catalytic convertor due to the only by-product being water. I have no clue what the trade-off ratio is.
