Dell Server -2: Sees Bigger Impact Next Year >DELL

By Bob Sechler
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

ROUND ROCK, Texas (Dow Jones)--Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) officials said
they expect their new Itanium-based server unveiled Tuesday to eventually be
a big market hit, but they stopped short of predicting significant revenue
from it this year.
"Next year, you're going to start to seeing it become more significant,"
said Gene Austin, a spokesman for Dell's enterprise systems group. "It's not
going to be a big piece, in our belief, in the overall scheme" this year.
The company declined to provide any precise market projections or sales
forecasts for the new system, dubbed the PowerEdge 7150 server, which is
based on Intel Corp.'s (INTC) new 64-bit, Itanium processor.
Intel will officially release its new Itanium processor next week, although
a number of computer systems based on the processor already have been
displayed.
Dell officials provided reporters with a look at their Itanium-based server
Tuesday, on the initial day of a two-day event here to outline the company's
overall enterprise computing strategy.
Austin said about 30 Dell customers already are testing prototype versions
of the PowerEdge 7150. Shipments of the product will begin this summer,
although its price hasn't been set.
