I was going to include some Wilshire 5000 index or S&P values which are broader measure of market values rather than Naz to convince you that MD is under control relative to equity values.
Another factor is that I think people would more likely borrow money to buy CSCO YHOO RMBS and other net stocks on margin then they would tend to on Ford, GE, 3M or GM IMO. So your conclusions based on two values of NYSE MD to corresponding NAz values has limited validity.

RE speculation, if your in equities it is for speculation for the prospect of capital gains. It is surely not for the 1% dividend rate.
